A Modern Day Solomon

If you haven’t stumbled onto TED.com, you must. The videos there are pure genius. The one below was particularly applicable to ministry, as Barry Schwartz deals with the real need in our society today: wisdom. A few of the things he talks about are:

  • Incentives – He says that incentives oftentimes lower people’s participation. Are we still giving away iPods to the kid who brings the most friends to youth group?
  • Contextualizing – Rules can’t plan for every given scenario.
  • The value of wisdom
  • All work is moral work (which, in turn, means that being successful at that work depends on wisdom)
  • We are always teaching
  • The biggest need in education is character
