The Government vs. Private Citizens

By Matt · Comments (0)
Monday, April 13th, 2009

Have you come across this story from CNN about the group of people from Kauai who decided not to wait on their govenment to repair and reopen a local park? Polihale State Park was closed last December when floods destroyed a road and facilities in the park. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said that reopening the park would take:

  • $4 million (money they say they didn’t have)
  • Up to two years to fix

A group of business owners whose businesses depended on the park to survive decided to do it themselves. To fix the park it took

  • Zero cost to taxpayers
  • Private donations of machinery, materials, and manpower
  • 8 days

Citizens 1, Department of Land and Natural Resources 0.

Celebrating Easter with a Cage Match

By Matt · Comments (5)
Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

From the “Why I think Relevance is a Myth” file, a church seeking to be relevant this Easter. Per the church website:

For years the church has taught us to be “the nice guy” when we have really been called to be Ultimate Fighters. But what do we fight for? Join us on Easter and throughout April, as we “jump into the Octagon of Life” and learn how to be the “The Ultimate Fighter!”

The pastor is quoted in a local news report as saying, “In the mixed martial arts arena there’s an expression, and the expression is don’t tap out and he [Jesus] didn’t tap out.” He continues, “We want a relevant message to teach to people. And we want to be able to take this ancient gospel and make it relevant to someone today.” You can go here to see a news video.

The truth is, yes, technically Jesus didn’t “tap out,” but he also didn’t fight back. Jesus was not a participant in the sport of ultimate fighting, but of ultimate beating. He was like a lamb being led to slaughter.

The words of 1 Corinthians 1 seem appropriate right now:

Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

Get a Free Logo Tomorrow

By Matt · Comments (0)
Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Shawn-Weston and I were suitemates in college, and he’s apparently doing freelance graphic design work. Monthly he’s offering people who participate in his “Saturday Freebird” a free service. It looks like he’s giving away his free service to as many people as possible, not just one random winner. So, it might be prudent for you to be one of the first to participate if you are interested. If you are looking for a new logo for your church, ministry, small business, whatever, here’s what you need to do to participate:

  • On the first Saturday each month, go to http://ShawnWeston.com.
  • If you’re interested in the Saturday Freebird of the month, send an email to SaturdayFreebird@gmail.com.
  • You must reply by midnight on Saturday to receive the free offer.
  • Wait for a reply, and we’ll take it from there.

From Shawn’s site:

The Saturday Freebird for April 4th, 2009 is:

A complete logo design. If you need a logo designed, here’s your chance to get it for absolutely free. Check back on Saturday, April the 4th for more details.

First Saturdays = Free Stuff at ShawnWeston.com.

Head over to Shawn’s site tomorrow if you are interested.

We Need More Politicians Like This

By Matt · Comments (1)
Monday, March 30th, 2009

Check out this YouTube video on this mayor from Canada. She’s been mayor for 31 years, is 81 88 years old, plays hockey, and runs her city debt-free with $700 million in reserves.

I haven’t done any fact-checking, so I’m not sure what the “other side” of the story is, but I’m not sure I care. I would vote for her. Doesn’t look like her city is in need of a bailout.

The Future of Church Buildings?

By Matt · Comments (0)
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Stumbled across a piece in the New York Times about a man who lives in a 344 square foot apartment with 24 rooms. Okay, well, not exactly 24 rooms, but his apartment is reconfigurable with sliding walls into 24 different configurations. It is pretty amazing. Read the article and then check out the slide show.

Might this be a cost effective way for churches to minimize their footprint? Could we have a sanctuary, youth room, nursery, prayer chapel, dining hall, soup line, classroom, theater, and offices all in one room?

Just a thought.

Google Reader vs. Bloglines

By Matt · Comments (3)
Friday, January 16th, 2009

I’ve been a pretty ardent supporter of Bloglines as my RSS feed reader of choice. I still think if all you want to do is read RSS feeds, Bloglines is the way to go.

However, I’ve seen so many people using Google Reader that I’m going to give it a shot for a little while and see what I think. The ability to share things on Google’s huge user network is the biggest incentive. I may not have it set up completely how I like yet, but so far I still prefer Bloglines’ interface for simply reading feeds.

Anyone else make the switch one way or the other?

A Presidential Debate Idea

By Matt · Comments (1)
Thursday, October 9th, 2008

After two snoozer debates with mostly empty rhetoric, it is pretty obvious the candidates don’t want to talk isses or facts.  So we should at least make this entertaining and raise the stakes.  My new dabate format proposal:

  • The moderator is there to try and keep time commitments even.
  • The questions are asked by one candidate to the other candidate.  The candidate has 2-3 minutes to respond.
  • The candidate who asks the question is free to offer a rebuttal, but has only 10 total minutes available for rebuttal during the entire debate, requiring them to be brief, and/or choose their rebuttals carefully.

To make it really interesting, we could have something like Guitar Hero where when people either don’t answer the question, offer platitudes, or other nonsense their time starts ticking away faster and faster.  Okay, that wouldn’t work, but it’s a nice thought.

The Changing Definition of "Cute"

By Matt · Comments (0)
Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Has anyone noticed the changing definition of the word cute?  It used to mean something that brings a smile on your face in a way that is innocent, childish, youthful, or fluffy.  You know, bunnies, puppies, and little kids making funny faces.

Judging from Facebook photo comments, cute now means: provocative, sexy, or suggestive.

(And just in case someone reads this who makes comments like this on Facebook–I’m not directing this at you. It really is a widespread phenomenon.  I’m just making an observation.)

I find it interesting to watch the evolution of language before my eyes.

RSS Bloat and Youth Ministry Blogs

By Matt · Comments (2)
Friday, May 16th, 2008

For those who read my blog via RSS, you may not have noticed that my blogroll has grown quite a bit over the past few weeks. When I subscribe to a feed in bloglines, it automatically shows up in my blogroll in my sidebar. You might want to browse and see if anything interests you.

For a long time I had pared down the blogs I follow via bloglines by over 50%. But lately, I’ve been hunting for some good youth ministry blogs and pretty much adding anyone and everyone that I come across. If you have any other suggestions (even if it is your own blog), drop a comment.

Maybe after subscribing to these for a few months I’ll whittle some down that don’t do anything for me. Until then, my manageable blogroll is starting to creep up into bloated territory.

[PS - I didn't have time to make the next post on Dare 2 Share's Deep and Wide Youth Ministry Thesis. It will be posted Monday.]

My Top Ten Movies

By Matt · Comments (5)
Monday, May 12th, 2008

I’ve been tagged to post my top ten favorite movies.  Since I’m not a big movie buff, the following list will be something more along the lines of “first ten movies than come to mind,” which might, by the sheer power of the subconscious, also be my top ten favorite movies.

  • Top Gun
  • Smokey and the Bandit (The first.  Two and three were horrible.)
  • Ghostbusters
  • Juno
  • The Patriot
  • The Bourne trilogy
  • Hotel Rwanda
  • O Brother, Where Art Thou
  • Batman
  • Mean Girls (No, I’m not kidding.  The insight into teen culture is sheer brilliance.)

Wow, that’s an interesting list.  Don’t judge me.

Up next I tag my usual crew: Noah, Sadie, Brit, Rusty (who probably won’t make a post, but that’s okay), and Jake.
