I also think this is a great book and that the StrengthsFinder profile tool is extremely valuable. The science and statistics behind this tool are outstanding and proven with millions of participants to date.

I believe it is extremely important to understand your strengths and then strive to work in those areas of strength as much as possible. It is also important to ensure you consider your values and your personality when you are doing your strengths assessment and don't just consider your StrengthsFinder Talents in isolation.

Also, in the way they break down the leadership categories, 4/5 of my strengths fall in the "Strategic Thinking" category, none in the "Influencing" or "Relationship Building" categories, and only one in the "Executing" category. No wonder nothing ever gets done.

Oh, and when I took it a second time, I got 5/5 in "Strategic Thinking."

1. Input - Have a crazing to know more. Like to collect and archive information
2. Deliberative - Serious care in decisions or choices. Anticipate obstacles.
3. Intellection - Characterized by intellectual activity. Introspective.
4. Analytical - Search for reasons and causes. Ability to think about all the factors that might affect a situation.
5. Learner - Great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. Process of learning excites.

Pretty much, it's says I'm boring, which is probably right. It's why I like to sit around and philosophize all day.

Self-assessment tools such as this should be viewed as having very limited value.

Since the input comes from the user, so do the results.

So it is always skewed the way the user sees (or wants to see) himself.

Since none of us are even remotely objective when it comes to evaluating ourselves (quick: name three beliefs that you have that are incorrect), this is more than a tiny problem.
