The old theme was developed years ago and hasn't been updated for all the new latest advances in the Wordpress architecture. Since Vigilance is brand-new, it's up-to-date and it looks like the developer has structured it using child themes in such a way that he can update the core of the theme as Wordpress develops and you can keep all of your custom CSS styling. I'm really pleased. Also, they just released their second theme (Titan) a few days ago and it's pretty sweet looking as well. I'm really impressed.
