Helping teens to become self motivated learners of God's word is vital.

When the desire for God comes from within, instead of from the youth worker, then the student is open to teaching from the Spirit who is always there.

Even the best intentioned, best trained youth pastor can't always be there.

Jerry, Thanks. As you can see, I wrote that post two and a half years ago, and my thinking has moved past that some. I haven't read Tickle's book, but I think I know what you are getting at. It's actually one of the critiques I have against Marko's YM 3.0 book--it deals almost exclusively with being culturally relevant and doesn't dive deeper with some of the theological/philosophical moves that are going on on our culture.

I want to read your thesis.

Matt when you write, "In becoming theologians, we lay down the idol of success, the idol which in my opinion has caused our widespread failure. By choosing instead to be faithful to the gospel, in all that we do, regardless of outcome, I believe that we will begin to see success as a natural result." I say AMEN. and AMEN.

But I also think becoming theological in youth ministry is a result of two factors beyond it's current ineffectivness: 1. its the natural progression of this new ministry now only about 100 years old and only 40 years with intentional professionals 2. There is something much larger going on in the cultural and in the Church universal that Phyllis Tickle gets at in the "The Great Emergence" I think the ineffectivness of ministry, the need for theological hang time, and quest for more meaning, and the 3.0 of youth ministry as Marko calls it are all symptoms of this greater thing.

Thats by the way (in greater depth) what my thesis was all about.

Tony, Those questions are where most of us get our start, me included. One of my points is that we have to ask, "Is what we do and they way we do it in coherence with what we believe?" We say we believe in the overwhelming power of the gospel but use gimmicks from business and marketing tactics to grow our ministries. In my opinion much of common youth ministry practice is contradictory to what we say we believe.

And I am definitely a fan of a mentoring approach to discipleship.

I am a lay person who works specifically with 10,11,12 grade students.

There are two questions that I try to get the students to think about. What do they believe? and more importantly, Why do they believe it? That is how I began my theological path in life. I left the church at age 19 and did not return until I was 32. My church did not have a youth group or, for that matter, any type of discipling or mentoring process. Out of the two - I believe a mentor would have done for me in discipling me than classes would have.

[...] So, my post a couple of weeks ago may have been a bit on the negative side. I talked about the doom and gloom of youth ministry and how if it didn’t change, it would simply die. If anyone happened to read the post, they probably would have thought I was a pretty stark pessimist. [...]
