By choosing instead to be faithful to the gospel, in all that we do, regardless of outcome, I believe that we will begin to see success as a natural result." I say AMEN. and AMEN. But I also think becoming theological in youth ministry is a result of two factors beyond it's current ineffectivness: 1. its the natural progression of this new ministry now only about 100 years old and only 40 years with intentional professionals 2. There is something much larger going on in the cultural and in the Church universal that Phyllis Tickle gets at in the "The Great Emergence" I think the ineffectivness of ministry, the need for theological hang time, and quest for more meaning, and the 3.0 of youth ministry as Marko calls it are all symptoms of this greater thing. Thats by the way (in greater depth) what my thesis was all about. One of my points is that we have to ask, "Is what we do and they way we do it in coherence with what we believe?" We say we believe in the overwhelming power of the gospel but use gimmicks from business and marketing tactics to grow our ministries. In my opinion much of common youth ministry practice is contradictory to what we say we believe. And I am definitely a fan of a mentoring approach to discipleship.
