Tony, Those questions are where most of us get our start, me included. One of my points is that we have to ask, "Is what we do and they way we do it in coherence with what we believe?" We say we believe in the overwhelming power of the gospel but use gimmicks from business and marketing tactics to grow our ministries. In my opinion much of common youth ministry practice is contradictory to what we say we believe.

And I am definitely a fan of a mentoring approach to discipleship.

I am a lay person who works specifically with 10,11,12 grade students.

There are two questions that I try to get the students to think about. What do they believe? and more importantly, Why do they believe it? That is how I began my theological path in life. I left the church at age 19 and did not return until I was 32. My church did not have a youth group or, for that matter, any type of discipling or mentoring process. Out of the two - I believe a mentor would have done for me in discipling me than classes would have.

[...] So, my post a couple of weeks ago may have been a bit on the negative side. I talked about the doom and gloom of youth ministry and how if it didn’t change, it would simply die. If anyone happened to read the post, they probably would have thought I was a pretty stark pessimist. [...]
